Candida and Astra Off Cowes by Steven Dews Candida and Astra Off Cowes by Steven Dews £123.00
An Opportune Breeze from the South East by Steven Dews  Depicting four Big Class yachts racing off Dartmouth in August 1893 in a regatta organised by the Start Bay Yacht Club.  After an early lull, during the late morning of the second day an opportune breeze blew which enabled all four yachts to start racing. Britannia was eventually victorious, followed across the finishing line by Navahoe, Satanita and Calluna.

Endeavour and Velsheda Racing in Torbay by Steven Dews  Endeavour joined the racing circuit in 1934 in order to "tune up" for her planned attempt at the America's Cup. However, the racing at these regattas was not serious enough to provide a real test of the yachts ability, so her owner, Sopwith, arranged a private contest at Torbay with the only other 'J' Class able to provide real competition. Although Velsheda was fast, she proved to be no match for Sopwith's new yacht.  Subsequently Endeavour raced for the America's Cup itself in Rhode Island against Rainbow, the American defender. Close, but ultimately unsuccessful, Endeavour was actually the only British 'J' Class to come close to taking the America's Cup from the Americans.

Britannia & Yankee: Round the Island Race, 1935 by Steven Dews  The symbolic battle between the Big Class yachts Britannia and Yankee during their epic race around the Isle of Wight in 1935, in which Yankee was eventually victorious.  Britannia was commissioned by the Prince of Wales, later to become Edward VII, and built in 1892. She was one of the most successful Big Class yachts in history and remained amongst the leaders in her class for well over 40 years. Yankee, on the other hand, was built in 1930 and only came to race on the "J" Class regatta circuit on 1935.

Rolex Swan Regatta (Crackerjack, Rounding the Buoy) by Steven Dews  Crackerjack, a Swan 46 racing yacht is seen racing around the East Lepe buoy in the Solent during the challenging Rolex Swan European Regatta in 1997. Due to the light winds, courses were kept short during the regatta, which allowed for plenty of close action for the large Class 1 yachts such as Highland Fling, Sotto Voce and Dark Swan. However, Crackerjack kept the pressure on the larger yachts and in recent years has won many prizes. She made a stunning sight, beating up the boisterous Solent during this breezy battle.

The Last Beat by Steven Dews  Depicts two classic yachts, Shamrock and Columbia, in the last of their famous America's Cup races in 1899. The race was held along the Jersey shore on October 29th and the run down mark was described by one American author as "the finest fifteen mile run in international yachting history". The two craft raced neck and neck until the last beat, when Columbia finally edged ahead. Once in the lead, Columbia turned the stake boat faster than her rival and was eventually victorious by over six minutes.

Velsheda - Sail Trials on the Solent by Steven Dews  After a distinguished racing career in the 1930s, Velsheda languished for many years on a mud berth on the Hamble. Eventually sold, her new owner set about rebuilding her with the latest rig, sail technology and deck hardware. The result was the creation of a yacht which is both fast but which retains her classic racing pedigree. Velsheda was relaunched on 3rd September 1997 and she spent several weeks on the sail trials on the Solent which are depicted in Steven Dews latest work.

Moonbeam at Fife Regatta by Steven Dews  Celebration of the Fife Regatta, which was held on the Clyde in June 1998. The regatta was organised to bring some of the greatest yachts built by the famous Clyde yard of W Fife & Son back to their birthplace. The yard thrived from 1790 to 1965 and Moonbeam III was the fastest of the surviving Fife yachts to return for the celebrations. Designed by William Fife III and built in 1903, Moonbeam III was victorious in two of her races and is depicted here during the final event of the great regatta, The Kyles of Bute Race.

Shamrock and Lulworth off the Needles, 1929 by Steven Dews

Featuring two of the greatest racing yachts of the first half of the twentieth century battling for victory at Ryde in The Royal Victoria Yacht Club Regatta of 1929. The opening day of the regatta featured a circuit of the Isle of Wight for yachts exceeding 21 metres and Shamrock, owned by Sir Thomas Lipton, and Lulworth, owned by Mr A A Paton, totally dominated the race, struggling for supremacy over nearly six hours of sailing time. As the pair passed The Needles, and the celebrated local lighthouse, Lulworth finally forged ahead and was eventually victorious by only 41 seconds.

Velsheda Wins the Start by Steven Dews

Depicting three of the greatest yachts of the first half of the 20th century racing together for the first time in 50 years. Velsheda, Shamrock and Endeavour last raced together in 1937 but were reunited off Antigua, in the Caribbean, for an historic series of races over three days in 1999. Commissioned to record the reunion by the owner of Velsheda, Steven Dews has chosen to paint the start of the first race and, in this scene, Velsheda leads the way, Endeavour is second and Shamrock third.

Ivan Berryman - Battle of Britain Art

Artist Ivan Berryman has been producing many pencil drawings depicting scenes from the Battle of Britain. Each of these is signed by one of the pilots who was actually present at the battle, and is often inspired by the events they took part in themselves. Special signed print editions have also been created from existing full colour print editions, with some featuring multiple pilot signatures. You can find all of Ivan's Battle of Britain artwork on his website - www.ivanberryman.com, or see a full list of pencil drawings - updated regularly, in our dedicated section of pencil drawings.

When you go to a product page for an item in our shop, click on the names of the pilots where they are linked in the text for an item to see a profile page for that pilot. Often we include photos of signing sessions along with details of their flying career, and a full list of all items signed by the pilot.

Pilot Signed Battle of Britain Prints and Original Pencil Drawings

Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain

We are busy building up a portfolio of many many original pencil drawings which depict events from the Battle of Britain, the famous air battle won by 'the Few' in the summer of 1940. The British and Commonwealth pilots defended the air above Britain and the surrounding seaways from the might of the German Luftwaffe. Greatly outnumbered, the bravery of these young pilots saved the country from invasion, and let Britain survive to go on to defeat Germany. Without that first crucial victory, the outcome of the war could have been so very different. We have been busy arranging signing sessions with the few pilots who fought in that great battle who remain with us to this day. Our newly commissioned pencil drawings are often based on the descriptions of the battle by these great men, and are authenticated by their signatures. We have also had several editions of existing prints signed in full, or have signatures added to parts of existing editions. We have also incoporated signatures of some of the German pilots who also took part in the battle, some of whom went on to become top scoring aces of the war. See our Original Pencil Drawings Section - particularly the section of artists David Pentland and Ivan Berryman. Also, see our New Signature Editions section to see all of our newly signed editions.
