Spirit of England by Peter Cornwell.

75,000 people poured into Twickenham to witness rugby history as the mighty Springboks, unbeaten in 17 games, attempted to emulate the New Zealand record of 18 consecutive test match victories. The English side included Jeremy Guscott and Matthew Dawson, the catalysts behind the victorious Lions team of 1997, the last team to defeat the South Africans. The signs looked ominous for England as Roussow scored an early try converted by Percy Montgomery. Within 5 minutes Mike Catt produced a delightful crossfield ball which Dan Luger caught brilliantly wide on the left wing. Fending off Stefan Terblanche he managed to feed the ball to Guscott looping around the outside to score the try. From then on Englands superb forwards built the foundations for a magnificent victory and it was fitting that Darren Garforth was made man of the match for his dynamic display. The rest of Englands points came from stand in place kicker Matt Dawson. Matt held his nerve twice in the second half to give England the lead. Even at the death it seemed that England would be denied by a dramatic last minute try as South Africa broke away from their own line, but as the final telling pass was delivered a lunging deflection from the outstanding Dan Luger prevented the score and gave England their first victory over a Southern Hemisphere team since 1995.
