Denis Compton CBE (deceased) *Signature Value : £65 | Born 23rd May 1918, Denis Compton became a leading batsman for the England cricket team in the 1930s, and remained at the top of the game until retiring in 1956. The pinnacle of his career was in 1947 where he broke several world records, including scoring 18 centuries and almost 4000 runs in a season. He went on to become a cricket commentator for the BBC. Outside of cricket, he also played football for Arsenal, winning the league in 1948 and the FA Cup in 1950. Sadly, Denis Compton died on 23rd April 1997. |
