Jimmy Greaves Former England footballing great. Jimmy Greaves was born in East Ham in London in 1940. His football talent was being spotted by a scout for Chelsea. Jimmy Greaves made his debut for Chelsea in 1957 scoring in his first match. Having scored 124 League goals in only four seasons at Chelsea, Greaves moved to Milan at the start of the 1961/62 season. Jimmy made his England debut against Peru in May 1959 and scored 44 goals in 56 internationals for England, twice scoring four times in a match. Jimmy Greaves returned to England and in December 1961 the Tottenham manager Bill Nicholson paid a British record transfer fee of £99,999 to take Jimmy Greaves to White Hart Lane. Jimmy Greaves scored 21 goals in 22 League matches during what remained of that season. The following season he scored 37 goals in 41 matches - a club record which stands to this day. He scored two goals in the European Cup Winners Cup Final in 1963 and won an FA Cup winners medal against his old club Chelsea in 1967. In March 1970, Greaves moved to West Ham as part of the deal which saw Martin Peters move to Tottenham. Jimmy Greaves retired from football in 1971. |
