Cock A Snook - The Last Five Nations
Champions by Ronnie Browne
The sun sets on the last 5 Nations'
Championship, that same sun rising on a new style of Scottish
International Rugby, honed to razor sharpness on the Murrayfield back
pitches. The new style won a bagful of tries represented here by John
Leslie's in the first ten seconds of the campaign, and Gregor Townsend's
against France to give him a rare Grand Slam of tries in a 5 Nations.
25 out of a squad of 26 took the field
at various stages, only Craig Chalmers missing out. But let's not be
churlish, he's allowed to join this celebration too, along with the
coaches. (Jim Telfer is moving out of the picture for obvious reasons).
Back-room boys such as physios, medics
and business organisers, all of whom play their own part in such success,
are represented in the form of the National Fitness Adviser and the Team
Manager. If anybody feels left out, I can only apologise.
Alan Tait has finally found something
concrete to point at in the successes of the championship reflected in the
shining facets of the trophy. Neil Jenkins represents our defeat of Wales,
but also the Welsh defeat of England. Thank you Neil!! The upside-down,
torn Shamrock and the twisted Eiffel Tower speak for themselves. And
finally, we must not forget that wooden spoon we were supposed to have
won, whose handle these gentlemen have so well and truly broken.
